Review of Chasing The Red Queen
Chasing The Red Queen by Karen Glista is a fantasy book written in the third person's point of view. It journeys the life of Donja, as she goes through big changes in a short period of time. From her mother remarrying, giving her and her little brother a new father and a sister, to leaving her best friend because she's forced to move away from the only place she has called home so as to be with the whole family.
Now in her new home in Sault Ste. Marie, a place her grandparents fled from in the past and refuse to talk about, she meets a handsome, mysterious, sexy man, Torin. The attraction between them is instant and undeniable, but with him comes a lot of mysteries. She's thrust in a world of creatures she thought only existed in story books and movies, and soon discovers he wants more from her, her blood.
What I liked about this book, is the relationship between the two girls, Donja and Makayla. The stepsisters, though at first didn't see eye to eye because of what they assumed of each other, soon become best of friends, balancing each other out, filling missing gaps in each other's lives, helping with past traumas, and even being confidants for one another. They become real sisters after getting to know each other, and this shows how much fear can actually hold you back.
What I didn't like though, is the unrealistic nature of the relationship between Donja and Torin. I feel like it happened way too fast and was portrayed as more of lust than love. I agree that we all are physically attracted to the person we like, but falling in love is a process, it's spending time with someone and actually getting to know them. So I wish this had been portrayed.
I give this book a 3 out of 4. I'm removing 1 star because of the few errors I found and also why I didn't like the book. Other than that, the book is good, the author transports us to Ontario where she graphically tells us of the beautiful scenery, making you be a part of it. Plus the good plot, there was a lot of action and the author gave a well detailed insight of the fights, which had me hooked.
I recommend this book to young adults and adults too who like stories with supernatural creatures. I don't advise children to read it, because it has some profanities and sexual scenes.
