Review of Running the Sahara
Running a marathon is something that many can only dream of. Marcel Nickler made his dream come true when he started running the marathon in 1999. He has run several marathons in Switzerland, Germany, France, the USA, and Morocco. He has participated in marathons like Lausanne Marathon, Hamburg Marathon, Berlin Marathon, Eiger Ultra Trail, Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, Marathon des Sables to mention a few. The book talks of his experience as a marathon runner and particularly the Marathon des Sables.
I enjoyed reading the book. I found it interesting how Marcel narrated his experience in the Marathon des Sables. The book focused on the Sahara desert running. The author did not fail to mention other marathons that he has participated in and their experiences. In general, Running the Sahara by Marcel Nickler is an enlightenment book.
His narration about Marathon des Sables was so clear that I would paint a vivid picture in my mind as I read. He has explained how he started to prepare for the marathon, traveling to Morocco, and finally arriving in the desert. He describes the tents at the bivouac so well and makes one feel like a participant in the setting up of the tents. He did not forget to include the information on how each day in the desert was and how it was like running different kilometers for seven days. He also mentioned what and how to pack and the recommended weight of the runner's backpack.
I found it surprising how one could shower with only a liter of water each day for seven days. The last page of the book has beautiful pictures of Morocco and the desert. They include dunes, bivouac, other participants in the race, and the tents they were living in during the duration in the desert.
Running the Sahara is written in the first-person narrative. It has boosted the personal nature of the book. The author has included his recommendation on some running gears like shoes, clothes, high-energy giving food, and more. One of the pieces of advice he has shared in his book is that, when one is doing a desert race, it is not advisable to step in other runners' footsteps. The reason is that the depth of each footstep is increased each time stepped. This will demand even more energy from you as the runner.
There was nothing I dislike about the book. I did not find any grammatical or typological errors in the book. It contains detailed information about the marathon in the Sahara and how to prepare for such races for better experiences. I am gladly giving Running the Sahara a four out of four-star rating. I found no profanity in the book. I recommend this book to individuals hoping to do marathon races or anyone who might be interested in ultra-races.
