Fans of Supernatural, Oliver Phipps is calling you out with his novel Spyder Bones. Phipps creates a story about Spyder, a soldier in more than one war. After discovering a supernatural force his whole life changes, and he begins to fight the unknown. Coming back from Vietnam, Spyder spends some time with his family until he gets a feeling that tells him to go to New Orleans. Here he meets Sunny. Sunny takes a liking to Spyder, so she sticks close with him throughout his mission. Once he comes to a standstill in his mission, he decides to take a trip to Europe. On this trip, his life changes one last time.

There are some great aspects to this novel. Being someone who does not know much about history and the wars that plagued our ancestors, I learned a lot about the Vietnam War in this novel. Even though this is a fictional novel, Phipps adds plenty of accurate informative information about the war. Adding to this, I thought it would be cool to continue learning about this time, but Phipps stops acting like it is taking place in 1969 and it is more taking place in current time. It would have been nice to see accurate time period examples.

Another great aspect of this novel is Phipps’s perspective on the supernatural. He does not write about these mystical creatures like anyone else does. It allows the reader to broaden their views on the supernatural and to think outside of the box. For example, I now think of creatures like a dragon as not being just a beast who flies and breathes fire, but as a beast that can possibly take over a person’s body or a beast that can breathe a mist that erases a person’s memory. There are unlimited possibilities when it comes to the supernatural.

I recommend this novel to those who love vampires, werewolves, and other legendary beasts. Especially those who love the battles and the adventures that go along with these creatures. However, due to sexual content and violence, I do not recommend this novel to children. There is also a strong religious presence in this story; therefore, I would not recommend this novel to those who dislike reading about religious topics.

I would rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars. It is a story that shows the effects of war and the effects of the unknown on the people. Despite this hard topic, it shows the readers that even in the darkest times there can be humor and love in the world. Overall, Spyder Bones spins a fantastical tale of intense battles, faith, and otherworldliness.
