The devil take tomorrow by Gretchen Jeannette is an enticing novel taking place during the American Revolutionary War in Philadelphia. Ethan Matlock a continental soldier and double agent, his mission is to infiltrate the British army to collect as much information as possible about a spy whose mission is to assassinate General George Washington.
We follow his journey as he managed to win the trust of his enemies. Using his charm and skills he secured himself an invitation to the home one the most Influencing men supporting the British army. he’s goal was to only focus on his critical mission however things change when he couldn’t resist the charm of the beautiful charismatic miss Maddie Groove, she enchanted him and poke his curiosity to know more about her. Ethan is drawn to her and he’s determined to protect her as his past keep tormenting him. A task proving to be more difficult when she kept putting herself in dangerous situations.
The characters are memorable and multi-dimensional. Maddie is opinionated, stubborn and very outspoken in fact all women in the book are very strong and defiant despite the period there living in; Ethan is charming, loyal and determined. Their development is also very impressive, you get to see gleams of the past of each character and how it shaped their personalities and believes, its show the similarities between the soldiers from both sides each one is fighting for his cause.
I was so engrossed in the story; the plot is realistic and suspenseful enough to keep you reading. What I loved the most is detailed descriptions of the sceneries, the buildings, the situations and the costumes; the story transported me to 1776-1778 Philadelphia as I could literally picture the events playing in my mind like a movie. It is clear that the author has conducted some intensive research to be able to deliver a storyline with this much of historical accuracy.
There was nothing I disliked about this book; it has the perfect balance between action romance and history. I need to mention that the story does contain some violence, battles and fights and also some sexual harassment scenes but nothing explicit
I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars; it’s beautifully written and edited. The devil take tomorrow was an excellent read I would recommend it to anyone because the book has romance, action, history and thrill all combine in the storyline.
