Cynthia and Dan: Cyber Wars by Dorothy May Mercer is a Sci-Fi piece surrounding the main character, Cynthia. Cynthia is a receptionist and chief of security for the office of Senator Mike. She and her brother Glenn decide to start a war against foreign terrorists and hire two computer geniuses to attack their systems and takedown twitter propaganda. Although their intentions are good, they face bumps along the way from USA officials.

Dorothy May Mercer also details Cynthia’s personal love affairs throughout the novel. When Cynthia got backed up in traffic after an emergency at the Whitehouse, she met a mysterious man, Sky Eastman. Although already in a relationship, she goes on a spontaneous date with him to pass the time. Read Cynthia and Dan: Cyber Wars to see how this complicated love triangle unfolds.

I enjoyed reading Ms. Mercer’s take on a 21st-century war. With all the sensitive information stored and spread online these days, this plot would be possible. I also found that the explanation of how they coded and took over other computers was simple enough that I could easily understand without any prior tech knowledge. I found this to be a very interesting plotline!

Something that I was more skeptical of was the romance aspect of the book. The first date and one-night stand seemed to be awkwardly worded and slightly unrealistic, in my opinion. I can not imagine that a woman in such a high-level security position as Cynthia's, would ever leave her car unattended on the road to go on a date with a man she had just met and later go up to his apartment alone. I liked the general idea, but the execution, to me, was a little bit off.

I would recommend this novel to other Sci-Fi and romance lovers. Please be aware that this novel might not be suited for children as there is an R- rated section detailing two characters in the act of intercourse.

I rate this book a 3 out of 4. I deducted one point because the romance part of the book was not really enjoyable to read. Nonetheless, I did enjoy the rest of the book and will check out other books by this author.
