Heroes of Atlanis by Ryan Carriere tells the stories of Roeg and Sephonei. Roeg is a member of the Great Spirit Clan but he is treated like an outsider. He looks noticeably different from everyone else in the clan and his physical limitations makes him unable to hunt, an important task in his clan. When he is told he cannot go on the great hunt by the clan’s second in command, Krukk, Roeg and his friends come up with a plan to change Krukk’s mind.
Sephonei is taken from her family and thrusted into an unfamiliar world with little training. She joins a duo of rune hunters in life threatening situations in search of the dragon rune.

I really liked Sephonei’s character. Her reaction to everything that happened to her felt natural and relatable, especially the crying. I liked the dynamic between Roeg and his friends. I also enjoyed the contrast in respect to the runes. Roeg’s clan thought runes were useless or even cursed, while the rune hunters risked their lives to find them.
I didn’t like how slowly the story progressed. The book is on the shorter side and it still feels too long for the events that occurred.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. The story took too long to get interesting. Books that have world building are always confusing at first but instead of being intrigued, I was just bored. The plot is still interesting so although I didn’t enjoy it that much, other people might.
I would recommend this book to anyone over 13 who likes fantasy books.
