Review by Ariheart -- Solaris Seethes (Solaris Saga book 1)
The crystals have the power to save their world or destroy it.
On Rynah's home planet, Lanyr, everything is held together by a special crystal. According to their legend, there was originally six identical crystals, which when united, had the ability to take out entire solar systems. Of course that was only a silly myth - or so they thought. When Lanyr's crystal is stolen, making the planets magnetic fields unstable, Rynah starts to have doubts. As Lanyr is destroyed, Rynah is forced to flee her home with the artificial intelligent space ship named Solaris. She convinces Rynah to enlist the help of 4 people from an outcast planet, believing that they are from an ancient prophecy. If Rynah is going to save her world, she must find all the crystals before someone else does, get back her home crystal, and navigate through the dangers of space, all while having to trust total strangers.
In Solaris by Janet McNulty, it shows the struggles of these unexpected heroes. Rynah likes to work alone, so by accepting this mission with others, it makes her job ten times harder. It took a journey across the universe in order for the characters to learn a lesson about themselves, but that just made it even more valuable. That definitely made for good character development. Even the ship was wiser by the end. It felt like I was growing along with the characters.
I'm not sure if a ship can be considered a character but if it is, then Solaris is my favorite. She is really quite funny and sincere, and definitely not just some emotionless machine like most think. With acting as chaperone, powering the controls, and flying through space, she has to deal with much more than the crew gives her credit for. She's pretty much the glue that's holding everything together. She might only be a ship, but she's a special one at that.
I also liked how it immediately jumped into action. Alot of books take half of the story just to get any adventure, but Solaris had me caught within the first few pages. I generally found nothing wrong with the book. It was action packed and there was never a dull moment on board Solaris. The few pictures helped me better visualize their world, and were a nice touch. I appreciate the effort put into making this book. For that I give it a 4 out of 4 stars.
This amazing sci-fi fantasy would be great for pre-teens and teenagers. It has little cussing and very fine editing. I'm not usually one for a space story, but this book can bring out more adventures than I'd thought possible. I'm really excited to see the next book in the series, since I know that Janet McNulty will keep us flabbergasted until the very end.
