We are Voulhire: The Knights of Chalethire by Matthew Tysz is the fourth installment to the “We are Voulhire” series. Since the attack on Soulhire and Magnum Caelum, Galen and his friends were forced to run to another city to seek refuge. In the city of Chalethire, Galen, Rowan, and Demetrius each make a new life for themselves. Their minds are still on saving Virko, a city now infested with demons. Seeking help from the prestigious Knights of Chalethire, they hope to restore peace to the tumultuous Voulhire. Little do they know that the Knights of Chalethire have secret agendas of their own.

One of the major positives for me is that in this book, it readdresses one of the major plot points which I thought was quite neglected in the previous book. This story introduces us to the Knights of Chalethire but it also brings the city of Virko back into the fold. I thought that it was important to have Virko back because it was known as being one of the most economically successful cities in Voulhire and to not include it into the politics of the country would have bothered me.

I did not like the pacing of this story. More than half of this story was just setting up for an upcoming battle. This entire book feels like a set up for next book. There was a lot of meandering around and talking when that time could have been spent having the characters do things. As a consequence of this, most of the action was rushed and overall quite vague.

Another thing which I didn’t like about this story was the fact that it was juggling far too many perspectives at once. Not only do we see things unfold from the perspective of our three protagonists, we are also able to see things from the perspectives of their enemies. This wouldn’t be a problem if they were only contending against one major antagonist. However, there are more than three antagonists in this story and their henchmen are also given time in the limelight as well. There are times when we only get about one or two pages in a certain character’s perspective before it switches to someone else. I feel like the perspectives from the minor characters could have been cut out and more depth could have been given to Galen, Rowan, and Demetrius.

I would give We are Voulhire: The Knights of Chalethire by Tysz a 2 out of 4 stars. There were a few typos in the story, but not enough to detract from the overall narrative. The characters and political aspects of this story are great but are bogged down by too many different perspectives and bad pacing. I do intend to continue reading the next book in the series. But this is mostly due to me being invested in the characters and wanting to see what happens to them. I wouldn’t be surprised if readers of this series start dropping off after this book.

I would recommend this story to anyone who has read the previous books from this series. If you’re the kind of person that likes to read a story which has a great number of vignettes from different characters then you’ll like this story. I don’t believe that this would be good for anyone who plans to pick this up as the first book to read out of the entire “We are Voulhire” series.
