The Mindset by Ace Bowers was a very inspirational memoir. Ace himself has had a very challenging life but ultimately has overcome his challenges with his optimism and enthusiasm. From a tumultuous household, to a janitor, to a successful and married businessman, Bowers proves what it means to believe in a better future for yourself. He uses many memorable anecdotes from his life, as well as altogether good storytelling to allow the reader to walk through his life alongside him.

This book felt very honest and open; nothing was sugar coated but nothing was held back. His words were genuine and that made me appreciate them even more. Generally, I my view of this book is positive. There were no distracting grammatical errors and it was well edited, which further highlighted the great storytelling. His use of other people in his life, such as his friend and brother, as a contrast to his own mindset was particularly striking. It is easy to describe simply how you overcame your own circumstances, or how others did not overcome theirs, but it is particularly broadening to see people from the same circumstances have two very different outcomes.

There was not very much I did not like about this book. It was relatively short, but not detrimentally because it felt like the included information was all that needed to be said. I would have liked to have seen a bit more descriptions of specific things another person could do to change their own mindset, though. While it is truly inspiring to see what a proper mindset has done for Bowers, I was expecting a little more specifics on how the reader can apply his fantastic mindset to their own life. However, the inspiration was enough to keep this book enjoyable and outweighed that small fact.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because ultimately, it provided far more inspiration than anything else. By the end, I felt very emotionally connected to Bowers and I respect him for everything he has experienced and accomplished. This is definitely an uplifting book and not a long read so if you are ever in need of some motivation, The Mindset will certainly provide it.

I would recommend this book to a more mature audience, such as teens or adults, for two reasons. The first is that although nothing is described too graphically or violently, there are mentions of topics such as drug abuse, self harm, and some moderate violence. While it is not overwhelming, it might be a little much for young readers. The second reason is that I think this book’s purpose, the encouragement of a proper mindset, would be best received by people who will have a better view of how to apply it, and more opportunity. I definitely appreciated this book and I think anyone who reads it will as well.
