In The Narrow Gate , written by John Servant , we are introduced to the character of Joe Jay , who experiences a series of events in his life where he has to choose between what he knows as morally right (based on his religious beliefs) and what the world believes is right (accumulation of wealth success and popularity). The other main character is a journalist named, John Kelly who is sent out on a work assignment to find out why Joe Jay, now on his death bed, is viewed by some people as a hero and a saint, whilst in the past he was perceived as a villain.

As the story begins, we are introduced to John Kelly who seems to have struggles of his own, stuck in a job he hates but appreciates because there are no more newspaper companies around. He is assigned as part of his work to investigate Joe Jay and from there on the story is narrated in the 3rd person. The story of Joe Jay who starts out as a lawyer and later progresses in his life to become a senator. However as he progresses through the corporate ladder, he makes some life changing decisions which do not only affect him but everyone else in his world, especially his wife and son.

What I liked the most about the book is how it is a constant reminder that one needs to stay grounded in their values, especially those values that they are taught at school and at home, so that as they progress into adulthood they will not lose themselves due to worldly influences. Sister Francis who is another pivotal character is Joe Jay's moral compass. She constantly reminds him to turn back to God and leave the ways of this world. This book would be great for those who take an interest in life lessons, especially Christians because, the author uses biblical references from time to time in the book.

As Joe Jay progresses in his working career, he completely loses himself when he meets individuals that influence him negatively and in the end he eventually loses his job due to him getting caught up in fraud, he is then viewed as a villain due to the scandal however he changes his life around at the end realising he has lost the world which he was seeking but found refuge in the Lord.

In closing, I would rate The Narrow Gate 3 out of 4 stars. Although I disliked the fact that the author used similar names starting with the same letters for all his characters, the book was also not well edited because I could pick up certain grammatical errors. I recommend it to readers who find their values in religion, it is a great eye opener. The book is suitable for readers aged 13 and above because it teaches important life lessons that one needs to know from a young age.

Staying grounded through intrinsically pure values (and what’s deemed morally acceptable) often leads characters down a path that’s the opposite of wealth accumulation and popularity. This plot sounds quite interesting! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
