[Following is a volunteer review of "Flicker World" by Brian Cramer.]
How far would you go to be with the person you love? Mark has to decide how far he will bend the line to reunite with his childhood sweetheart turned wife in this sci-fi fantasy novel.
Flicker World by Brian Cramer integrates a love story between the characters of Mark and his love, Lisa, and Mark’s foray into a new career which draws him into the world of top-secret research. When Lisa is ultimately killed in a car accident, Mark begins to delve into the possibility of once again being able to see her. The storyline takes you on fantastical adventures challenging your beliefs about the world you see around you.
This is a quick read that keeps you interested in the twists and turns of Mark’s adventures to reunite with Lisa. It could easily be read in one sitting and keeps your interest enough to want to continue to read it. While it is a sci-fi fantasy, it is not overly heavy in that it would be off-putting to someone who does not typically read this genre.
While reading, it felt as if this book was too long or too short, meaning that the character development was not as in-depth as possible. It could have functioned as a much shorter story or been developed more into a longer novel. There was also some confusion in the various timelines that take place that took the reader out of the story at times.
Additionally, some aspects were mentioned but then never developed, almost like an afterthought. These could have been developed more fully and/or left out of the story altogether and not impacted the direction or ending in any way. Again, these were elements that took the reader out of the story and wondering why they were included in the first place if they did not play a role in the bigger picture.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because while it was an enjoyable read, enough elements drew attention from the storyline and left the reader wondering about content choices. It would have also been nice to see the character of Lisa developed more. The descriptions of her as a vet with a side interest of chemistry where she routinely mixes random unknown chemicals both at work and at home does not make her endearing, nor do some of her ultimate choices in the novel.
The recommended audience for Flicker World would be adult readers. While there was not overtly sexual content, there were some sexual innuendos, suicidal themes, language, and some mentions of drug-related content that may not be appropriate for younger readers.
