Review by Tedynamite -- The Dark Web Murders
Book Four in the Inspector Sheehan Mysteries, The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare, focuses not only on the efforts of Chief Inspector Sheehan and members of his Serious Crimes Units in solving a series of gruesome murders being committed by a serial killer, but also the very real issue of the illegal sex trade. The novel highlights the depths of sexual depravity and the lengths people would go to, in order to appease their sexual appetites to include becoming members of a Sex Club. The fact that some of these persons were respected members of society and held prominent positions, makes the novel that more engaging. As a reader, I felt very conflicted in relation to the Killer's role. On one hand he helped in exposing the Club but on the other hand, he committed murder.
The writer also cleverly introduces the subject of a "Dark Web"; an aspect of the internet that is vastly unknown. The possibility that the internet has a darker, more ominous side is very chilling and immediately becomes a cause for concern.
The pace of the story was very great and I was very engaged. From finding out "who was the killer" to finding out "why was this person the killer", I did not want to put the book down. In addition to the pace of the story, the author provides a great insight into each of the characters who are a part of Sheehan's team. Whether a reader has read other novels in the series or this is their first novel, he or she gets to know each member of the team. I was very impressed with the roles that Detective Malachy McBride played in the novel and am very eager to see where the newest and youngest member of the Serious Crimes Unit is headed in future novels in the series.
The most intriguing aspect of the novel however is the story of the murder in the prison at the beginning. Right away I was captivated, I started trying to figure out from that story (1) how was anyone going to find out about that murder and (2) how did it relate to the general story line.
The writer did not reveal how the killer was able to get to Mrs. Sheehan and I thought this detail should have been included. Another issue was the long winded monologues that the killer used in the blogs on the Dark Web before detailing how the murders were committed. While it is understandable and it gave Chief Inspector Sheehan some insight into who the killer could be; it felt like I was sitting through a boring university lecture.
I rate this novel as 3 out of 4 stars. The story is well written however there are some typographical and grammatical errors.
I would recommend this novel to readers who love murder mysteries and are intrigued by good detective work done by officers of the law.
