Review by Rae27 -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second novel in the We are Voulhire series. This novel focuses mainly on a young man named Galen, a refugee to Voulhire, who inherited his great uncle’s forge. The new blacksmith-in-training adventures out of his recently acquired home in Magnum Caelum onwards to Virko, the industrial heart of Voulhire. This is done in an attempt to secure a steady flow of iron into Magnum Caelum which will benefit the town in numerous ways. As his expedition continues, Galen unravels various well-hidden secrets in Virko, some of which involve a man known as Folcro, the young lord of the city. As Virko prepares to become a city independent of their king, trouble arises in some of the least expected places.
I greatly enjoyed this novel throughout my reading. Each page revealed new information which, as the plot progressed, would come together to create a large picture detailing the past and present of the city of Virko, as well as its aristocrats. At no point in the novel did the writing seem rushed as it steadily progressed, ensuring to remain in control of the readers’ attention. My love of this novel was only greatened by the expressive descriptions of the characters and their setting. The description was so vivid that I felt as though I could go there right now. It felt real.
However, I found it difficult at times when new characters were introduced together to differentiate between each character without having to reread their introduction a couple of times to understand. As the character names were unfamiliar my confusion only increased.
It was clear to me that this novel was professionally edited. There were zero visible grammar or spelling errors. It was perfect. Each sentence was easily readable upon first glance, it made reading so much easier than if it was not well-edited.
As a result of my prior comments regarding the quality of We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko I find it fitting that this novel receives 3 out of 4 stars.
I believe that this novel will be easy to read for those who love books where the world is being built throughout the novel and where there is always more to discover as you read on. Due to the great editing, We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is a novel that can be read easily and within a few hours. It is not too long, with only 180 pages when reading on Kindle, meaning that this novel can be a quick read when you are in a reading slump.
