Review by monserrat_21 -- Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren
Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren opens with Benjamin Poe, former captain of the Lochton fire department who is now in prison awaiting his sentence for murdering Gabriel, his son, in cold blood. When he receives a visit from his new lawyer, Poe decides to finally share the truth behind this tragic event, which is that he never meant to kill Gabriel and he was actually tricked by a soul-collecting demon who was trying to take hold of his son’s soul by convincing him to start a fire that ended up killing three people. The demon's name is Crighton, and he is the protagonist of the second half of this book.
In this second half, while Poe is suffering in the Well of Lost Souls after taking his own life in jail, Crighton is assigned a new mission by his master, Lucifer. Since he is the best soul catcher in Hell, Lucifer commands him to bring him the soul of Ariel, an angel from Heaven. While attempting to capture her, they are both kidnapped by the members of the Sovereign Sector, a group of scientists who experiment on supernatural creatures. While they are being held captive they discover a shocking truth, that a bond exists between their two souls, one that will change the way they look at each other and how they act from that moment onwards. Crighton even goes as far as betraying Lucifer when he chooses to protect Ariel instead of bringing her to him. After breaking free from the Sovereign Sector, Crighton and Ariel must face the consequences of Crighton’s actions and, with the help of his mother, the demon Acadia, a mysterious angel named Castiel, and a few other demons on their side, they must face Lucifer in a fight for their lives and the lives of those they love.
I picked this book because I enjoy reading about supernatural beings, and Soul Seeker didn’t disappoint. The author did a great job creating a unique world involving humans, demons, angels, and the devil himself. Despite most of the main characters being supernatural creatures, they are so real and relatable that I was able to connect with them and feel for them throughout the book. I also enjoyed the development that all the characters went through in the book. Each major character in the book experiences some sort of growth, for example, Crighton allows himself to care for others and rebels against Lucifer while Ariel becomes stronger and realizes that not all demons are the same. The complexity of the characters and the way they changed throughout the book are the things that I liked the most about it.
I also liked how fast-paced it was, guaranteeing there was never a dull moment and making it an easy book to read. However, there were times when it felt like it was too fast-paced, especially towards the end. Certain points of the plot happened too fast and it was a bit confusing at times. For example, the romance between Crighton and Ariel developed very quickly and abruptly at first. Some characters weren’t introduced until the last chapters, giving the reader almost no time to learn about them or understand their relevance to the plot.
The book is professionally edited and I found very few errors, none of which distracted me from the plot. I choose to give this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. I’m taking away one star because I would have preferred it if the author spent more pages on building up to the ending since I felt it was slightly abrupt. Despite this, I really enjoyed this book. It was very entertaining, creative, and engaging from the very beginning.
I would recommend Soul Seeker to people who enjoy fantasy, romance and mystery. I would not recommend it to readers who might be sensitive towards profanity, sexual encounters, including one where consent is doubtful, and descriptions of violence and torture. There are also some mentions of religion and biblical themes that were relevant to the plot but might bother some people.

Hi! Thank you for stopping by. Reading the paragraph over, think I might have worded it wrong. I know it was Gabriel who started the fire, not Poe. Thanks for pointing it out.
