Review by Jayla1979 -- Debt Cleanse by Jorge P. Newbery
Debt Cleanse is a nonfiction book by entrepreneur, distressed debt and real estate investor, endurance athlete, and author, Jorge P. Newbery. The author gives the reader a step-by-step plan to eradicate large amounts of debt in a radical way, one Mr. Newbury personally learned by his own struggles in life.
At first glance, one might think this is just another book about how to become debt-free with traditional techniques. Paying more than your minimum payment each month, starting with your credit card with the highest interest rate, for example. That is not what Debt Cleanse is about. Mr. Newbury directs the reader to do something most people are afraid to do: STOP PAYING their creditors. Knowing that this will lead to collection calls and a low credit score, Mr. Newbury gives a compelling case as to why the reader shouldn't be afraid of these consequences. For example, by stopping payments, the debtor accrues cash that they may use to start over, hopefully driven to remain debt-free. (Mr. Newbury advises the reader how he or she may keep this money from being garnished by the government, as well as any property.) Three-quarters of the book lists specific directions to help the reader navigate legal battles over debt. Mr. Newbury covers all forms of debt, including home, auto, credit card, small business, among others. Numerous templates of letters to creditors and courts are provided. This book leads readers by the hand through the process of getting rid of debt they can't pay. The only aspect of Mr. Newbury's philosophy shared by other mainstream financial gurus is the concept of living cash-only, once you have completed your debt cleanse.
I found Mr. Newbury's experience very compelling. His motivation for writing Debt Cleanse comes through on every page. He wants to help people survive the scary situation of carrying debt they are unable to pay. He is precise and thorough in his directions. I did not have any questions myself, but Mr. Newbury comes across as the type of author who would be very approachable should the reader have a question about the specific steps provided. I am impressed with Debt Cleanse and I am grateful Mr. Newbury shared his story and his lessons.
It is important to note: If you don't have a mountain of debt, you might not choose to follow Mr. Newbury's process. You might not be willing to risk not being able to ever use credit again for a small amount to repay. This book will be extremely boring for that reader. I would recommend this book to people whose debt is so large, the drastic method proposed in Debt Cleanse would bring relief greater than risk. Should this method meet the reader's needs, he or she will have a plan laid out to a T for them to follow.
Looking at the book for the purpose it was written, getting rid of monstrous debt, I feel it truly is worthy of 4 out of 4 stars. There were no errors; it was very well edited. Some may disagree with the method outlined in Debt Cleanse. Yet, given our current economy, it will surely help quite a few, and they will find a well-written book with clear directions to guide them through the process of getting rid of overwhelming debt.
