Review by Muladan -- We are Voulhire: Someone Else's End
Galen finally makes it into the spotlight of the We Are Voulhire series. In a bid to restore Virko the homeland of Demetrius, Galen finds himself on his way to Soulhire the capital city of Voulhire. This comes as a great opportunity considering he enjoyed the marvels of Yamon Soul. He hears a lot about Voulhire's capital from the residents of Magnum Caelum. The people talk of all the glories of the city albeit not having had an opportunity to visit the city themselves. Galen, oblivious of Voulhire's troubles heads to the capital to seek king Arcolo's audience concerning Virko. On the journey, Galen learns a lot about Rowan's past. Galen finds the capital impressive yet he notes also that Soulhire has homeless people. Rowan's mother enables them to have an audience with the king. As soon as Galen gets to meet the king, the king is murdered in cold blood by a nightynight. Events change in rapid succession. Galen meets the lord turned eiodi Meldorath.
I liked the way Matthew Tysz presents his ideas in the novel. I especially loved how he talks about the dancing Riva who are getting stronger day by day and the dancing Nartik who dances randomly. It's just all amusing. I also liked how the author vividly describes the scenes in the book. I couldn't help but feel I was alongside the protagonist throughout the book.
I also liked the way the author makes his characters dispensable. This creates tension and anticipation. The death of king Arcolo Wilhelm though sudden serves this purpose. I also enjoyed it when Demetrius challenges Meldorath and comes out alive. This makes Meldorath less of a super mage and animates the story. The author also speaks of religion and magic in an enlightening way. He explains the role of magic to the Voulhire people and the relationship between caromentis and the cosmos in a clear manner. Finally, I liked the subtle manner by which the author incorporates humor into horror scenes to ease the tension build-up. I appreciated it especially when he used it on the horses when Galen and his friends were to escape the massacre in Soulhire.
I also found the map at the beginning of the page and the appendix of terms at the end of the book still resourceful despite this being the third book of the series.
I found nothing particularly displeasing about this book though I feel that the book is too short to be on its own. The author uses profanities sparingly and only insinuates eroticism. The book contains extreme violence and mutilation scenes. I'd advise you to skip if you are sensitive to such content.
I, therefore, rate We Are Voulhire: Someone's Else End by Matthew Tysz with four out of four stars. I found the book exceptionally edited and error-free. I also enjoyed reading the book and I had no reason to give a lower than perfect rating. I recommend this book to a mature audience after the thrill of science fiction. I recommend against very young audiences because of the extreme violence in the book. You don't want to miss this page-turner series if you are a fan of science fiction.
