Review by KDJ -- Homecoming by Jude Austin
Projects Tau and Kata, having made a daring escape from GenTech after two years of horrendous abuse, are free and on the run. Projects, not being considered human, have no personal rights and are seen as property. Navigating the world of humans would leave most projects at a disadvantage, but they have a secret weapon, because two years ago Kata was human.
With the freedom of humanity within reach for them both, can Kata trust those in his new inner circle, escpecially when his own government refuses to help him? Will Kata get his humanity back and will he be able to keep Project Tau out of the hands of GenTech?
HOMECOMING is book two in the Projects series. It can easily be read as a stand-alone novel. There are references to book one, but not enough for readers to get lost in it. It is a moderately paced futuristic science fiction novel.
Jude Austins writting in HOMECOMING brings readers on an emotional rollercoaster as Kata and Tau come to terms with the actions of the scientist of GenTech. I enjoyed the array of characters and found them well-written and entertaining.
My favorite characters in this novel are Tau and Kurai. Tau is both naive and inquisitive. The more he learns about the universe, humanity, and his own perceptions, the more I like him.
Kurai, on the other hand, is quiet and unassuming. What I liked most about him is the patience he shows when interacting with Tau, and how he seems to understand Tau perfectly despite having only recently met him. For example, the first time Tau encounters grass on Akkhen is a little tramatic. Believing he could not see the ground and not understanding how grass works caused him to shut down. Kurai is unbelievably patient and tolerant of Tau's ignorance of normal day to day things.
On the other end of the spectrum is my least favorite character, Taylor. There are a vast number of characters in this novel to dislike, (The Diamonds for example) but Taylor takes the cake for me. When he is first introduced, I almost feel sorry for him, and thought maybe Kata was over-reacting.
Then I read Kata's inner turmoil and Taylors bullying throughtout Kata's life has brought their relationship to this point. I can't find anything redeemable about Taylor's character. Although Taylor wasn't as evil as Dennison, the handlers, or even Vasari Adrianne, I think he broke Kata in a way GenTech would never be able to.
I easily rate HOMECOMING by Jude Austin 4 out of 4 stars. I can recommend this novel to young adult and adult readers of science fiction. There are non explicit mentions of torture, kidnapping, rape, emotional abuse, bullying, and murder. If you decide to give this novel a try, I hope you enjoy it ad much as I have.
