Review by azngurlmuimui -- Shield Down by William de Berg
Shield Down by William De Berg is a great read for those interested in space and survival. Scientists especially or an audience that appreciates a story that could very much become real one day. The author brings together fiction and science in a way that can make you question what you thought you knew. It starts with a bang! Literally. And as the story unfolds you can see where the author’s ideas stem from as pieces of scientific journals and interviews are incorporated along with their references in the footnotes. Diving deeper into the story, you see it evolve and it opens your eyes to the possibilities of the future.
The story is evolved mainly around 3 characters, Dr. Jacqueline DeFazio, John Bazany, and James Templeton. As the reader, you appreciate the intricate details of each scientist, where they started and how they evolved with their own individual ideas and opinions. To watch how they intertwined and untwined was entertaining. The author uses real settings and schools so you can imagine all these characters living and breathing in a real place where you can immerse yourself in their world. You are taken through each of their struggles as they present their own logic based on their version of the facts.
What I liked most about Shield Down were the facts presented where you can see William De Berg's ideas originated. I looked forward to this continuing throughout the story however about half way through it seemed to stop. I expected this to continue but it did not, however I understand the author went deeper into the fictional side of his story which would not need as many facts as the introduction.
What I disliked the most about Shield Down was the time leap. Many years would have passed without going into detail what has happened within each group. The colony that took so much work to build did not dive into the relationships of each individual involved as much as I would have liked. Personally, this would have given me more of a connection to the characters.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The book was exceptionally well edited however personally the story line could have been more intriguing. If I felt more connected with not only the characters themselves but with the people they have influenced, I would have rated the book 4 out of 4 stars. I still enjoyed the book very much so that is why I did not rank it 2 out of 4 stars.
