How To Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy is an amazing book written to motivate and to inspire. McCoy presents his own story - as well as that of several other successful people - with an honesty that is easy to relate to, and it is really difficult not to be inspired by the authenticity and sheer determination contained in this book.

Curtis McCoy was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes when he was only two months old, but he still grew up to become a very successful entrepreneur. At the age of twenty-seven, he already owned a number of companies in several industries and was very successful. Things went downhill when he was diagnosed with brain cancer though, as all he had worked for fell apart. The malignant brain tumor brought with it grand mal seizures, frequent comas and significant memory loss. McCoy shares the keys that helped him overcome those obstacles to achieve success all over again.

The book also contains interviews with other successful people - such as Jeff "Biggs" Wobig, a US Navy SEAL sniper, Connie Wyatt, CMO of Best Cellular (as well as McCoy's mother), Paul Watson, a pastor, Eric Payne, a business man, Caujuan Mayo, an author, Nathan Schulhof, a tech specialist and Jeff McGregor, a business developer and musician - as they also give an insight into the successes they've achieved, and how they managed them.

The author made it clear from the onset that his goal was to motivate and inspire, and he managed to do just that. The book had an originality to it, coming from the fact that it offered real life experiences of people who had navigated storms and overcome obstacles to get to where they wanted to be. Having people of different backgrounds, and with different personalities achieving success shows that success can truly be created by anyone who is willing to put in the effort. However, the people interviewed for the book hold some contrasting opinions, and this could be a potential problem for some readers. Another problem is that while the content is commendable, the book is not as actionable as you would expect of a typical "how to" book. Precise action steps that will help the reader implement each idea would have greatly improved the book's quality. The book was very well edited, as there were no errors or typos.

I would rate this book three out of four stars. The content is rich and inspiring, but the aforementioned shortcomings deny a perfect rating for an otherwise excellent book. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to work towards achieving success in any area of their lives.
