We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz

We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko follows the adventures of Galen Bray
who inherited a career, a bit of money and a house from his estranged uncle.
We also follow the path to conquest of Dalehei Meldorath, the powerful mage
seems to be aiming for bigger things. After the destruction of Hillport
and the island of St. Lorcia, Virko finds itself at the threshold of
supernatural subjugation. This happens after they had expelled all religion
from their capitalist paradise.

What I like about the story so far is that nothing seems to go exactly according
to plan, even for the powerful. But with that come opportunities for greater
prospects, kind of like real life. What I really like are the conversations that
drive the story, they tell you that these people's actions are not wanton. There
is a lasting purpose to what they want to achieve. The talks are also philosophical,
you get a sense of Mr. Tysz's perspective on the greater questions of existence. He
presents some interesting views about God, the relations between our terrestrial world
and other plains of existence.

A small criticism is the writing style, events and characters just pop out of nowhere.
Couple that with the fact that the scenes don't follow each other in a sequence, it all
gets a bit confusing. Another criticism I might have is that too much time spent setting
the scene and explaining silly little details. If it's not part of the bigger story I
don't want to read about it.

This story is for people who live in a former time, who live in the times of kings. It is
a story for people who enjoy the occult, the supernatural, and the awesome. Lastly, it is
a story for those who wish to learn how to apply knowledge. Sometimes you have an idea but
you don't know how to apply it, you might learn something from Voulhirians.

I chose this book because I read the first book and the ending to that one suggested that
The Fires of Virko the people of Voulhire still have major trouble on the way. It
did not disappoint, and I rate it a 3 out of 4. It met my expectations of a story
that has human will coupling with the possibilities of magic. Very nice.
