How To Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy is a collection of interviews about success and motivation. He wants to give his readers the keys to be successful in life by taking notes from people he thinks have achieved it. Readers will leave knowing some mantras to guide them in their journey and also some books that have inspired these power players. Hopefully, readers can stand on the shoulders of these giants to find tools to aid them in their path for greatness.

I liked the interview format of the book. I found it easier to follow as opposed to long anecdotes from the author. His personal story interlaced with the success stories of other contributors helped to further punctuate the points about how to achieve greatness. Also, I especially enjoyed the discussion about profanity as a way to show intellect. I have never heard this argument before, but I found it very intriguing. Interestingly we teach our children not to curse, but as we grow older it can change and turn into an indicator of intelligence. The author does not necessarily condone teaching your children to curse, but he does highlight it as a thought-provoking contradiction that exists in our society.

While such discussions were enthralling, I did not particularly enjoy all the Bible references and religious overtones. While I can appreciate religion's power in impacting one's dedication to the path to success, I feel the multiple religious mentions detracts from his message and alienates his readership. Perhaps, an addition of a secular voiced interview could have made the book seem more inclusive and balanced. For these reasons, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I would have considered giving this book 4 out of 4 stars if the book had been more inclusive of non-religious readers.

The book would be best suited for a younger religious audience just beginning their careers. More advanced readers would prefer more tactical advice on how to achieve happy and prosperous lives. For younger readers, these general guidelines would serve them well as they are just dipping their toe into the sea of opportunities.

McCoy teaches the basic principles to become successful in his book. He wants his readers to have all the tools to be a great achiever. After his near-death experiences, he wants to give everyone a chance at succeeding by leveling the playing field and giving everyone the knowledge he feels one needs to make it in this life.

I agree, it would have been a lot more accessible if it took a well-rounded approach and included aspects for non-religious people as well. Thank you for the review!
