The reason I chose to read How To Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy is not your typical reason. I normally don't read self-help books, but this just happened to come along at the right time. I am disabled in a nursing home trying to learn to walk again, going back to school again after twenty years, and believe it or not, I started my own little business in the nursing home making dream catchers. I'm actually doing very well, considering a year ago I had never made one. I just needed a little more encouragement since I haven't walked in seven years and at times it can get extremely frustrating and at times draining.

I am giving this book a star rating of a 3 out of 4 due to the amount of grammatical errors I found. What I liked most is the style the book was written in. It made it very easy to read and follow because of the short paragraphs and chapters as M. Curtis McCoy interviewed seven different people, which included a Navy Seal, his mother, a few entrepreneurs, and friends. He asks them all the same questions about their strengths, weakness, and their insights into what it takes to be successful. I disliked the fact that we know so little about the ones he interviewed. I would have liked to have known more about their story, their background, and how they came to be as successful as they are.

How To Be Successful isn't what I expected from a self-help book. McCoy tells his own inspirational story how he fights, struggles and despite all odds with his medical history he manages with the help of his loved ones to become a successful business owner. There are even things in his book that aren't normally in a self-help book, such as a section about profanity and how it can change people's perception of you. Think about it, it's true. When you hear a young teenage girl dropping the f-bomb left and right we think differently of her rather than we do of someone that's not, no matter her upbringing.

I recommend this book to anyone looking for motivation. It provides a combination of real-life insight with practical experience. I think the book suits entrepreneurs and everyone looking to build up their business. Anyone looking for a change in their life or job may also gain inspiration from reading this book. It may even help cancer patients. Give them the extra boost of confidence they need to push through. Don't think confidence is the right word I'm looking for, but you know what I mean!!

How To Be Successful was packed full of great quotes. My favorite being, "Money can't buy you happiness, but it can make life easier." So true. Trust me, mom of four. There were a lot of religious references throughout the book. I do not have an issue with them, but this might deter some from reading or even buying it.

I won't say this book isn't something I haven't heard before, but the perspective is uniquely different. The thing about success is it doesn't wait for anyone. The perfect time to start is now. One key theme resonates throughout the book and that is that you can overcome any set back provided you have something to live for. So, what are you waiting for?
