The first of numerous books in the series, We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies written by Matthew Tysz, is an adventurous and addictive novel that tells the story of an immigrant from war-torn lands, an old vengeance that still burns strong, and heightened tensions between the king of Voulhire and a past friend who quickly became a danger to the kingdom that he so dearly sought to protect.

Galen Bray, once trapped in a kingdom of war and hate, searched everywhere for a simple escape from the place he called home until that “simple” escape found him. He had inherited family property in a land called Voulhire. Voulhire is a world much like ours. People sing and dance and joke much like us. The only difference here is a power that some can draw from beyond the gateway between worlds, from Caromentis. As Galen explores his new home, Voulhire shows him all of its riches and opportunities. After realizing Voulhire has given him everything he’s ever wanted, all he wants to do is to show his thankfulness to the newfound kingdom and to all who have helped him get to where he is now. Galen’s new home appears to be perfect, but Voulhire hides its blemishes well.

There are many aspects to this story, some harder to decipher than others, but they give this book texture. There are layers, different feelings from chapter to chapter, and from character to character. That is what is most admirable about this novel. Despite this, no story is ever perfect. Due to the immense amount of new vocabulary (although the author provides a small dictionary for the reader) and switching from perspective to perspective, it makes it difficult to follow the storyline in the beginning. Beyond that, there were no other obstacles and was generally an enjoyable book to read.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars for an overall great storyline, along with twists and turns that kept me interested and inclined to read on. I simply could not bring myself to give this story a two because of its unique plot and scenes that were so well worded as to create a mental image so sharp; it was if I were watching it on the TV. The only reason I wouldn’t give this novel a four is that for the length of the majority of the book, I was slightly confused as to what was happening. With the narrators and settings changing so rapidly, it left me with my head spinning and sometimes having to reread chapters to grasp the full image.

I would highly recommend this book for teens and young adults due to the complexity of its fascinating storyline, that at times is challenging to comprehend. I will briefly mention that I don’t believe that children should read this story because of the brief profanity scattered throughout the book.
