An Imperfect crime by Fred G Baker. A murder mystery with plenty of twists and turns to keep you in suspense throughout. Peter, Allister, and Sarah are 3 friends with a common interest, they are all budding writers. During a night of drinking, the friends concoct a plan, a fake murder would be a bestseller, what could possibly go wrong? Unfortunately, as Peter awaits his fate on death row, this is a question he has asked himself many times. Awaiting his execution, Peter meets Father Montero, the prison priest. Father Montero listens to Peters story and after reading the book that lead to Peters demise, the priest promises Peter that he will pursue the truth.

Father Montero is not alone in his concerns about Peters case and teams up with Lt Lori Sanchez, a police officer who has been struggling with her own doubts ever since Peters trial. With Lori’s connections in the force and Father Montero’s contacts from his colourful past, the two unlikely comrades make an awesome team. Travelling across continents and counties they begin to realise that there is much more to the story and a web of lies, murder and mystery begins to unfold.

I would recommend this book to anyone that likes a good murder mystery where the suspense begins right from the start. In addition to plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing, I also like that the author has used this platform to raise awareness of human trafficking and the difficulties faced by authorities working across different jurisdictions. I would recommend this book to older teenagers and adults as there is some violence and profanity, but this is not excessive when considering the subject matter.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed the way that the characters continue to build throughout and, as the story evolves, you discover more about them and the motivations that enable the Priest and Lori to work so well together. Father Montero is such a cool priest with a colourful past and some interesting contacts and I really enjoyed the dynamic between him and Lt Sanchez as they work together to uncover the truth. This was a book was able to maintain a sense of suspense right to the end, in fact, is it really the end? I have a feeling we have not seen the last of this mystery or the partnership between Father Montero and Lori and I await a further instalment with anticipation.
