Review by KahigaVictoria -- Waves Break (on Unknown Shores)
Barry Litherland’s Waves break (on unknown shores) , is a contemporary thriller told in a fast-paced plot through the eyes of the protagonist journalist Phil Tyler. The story flips between the past and the present, telling the story of Phil and his friend Wayne. They are brought together by their shared traumatic past events where they lose a mutual friend, Stevie. The death of Stevie makes them bond where phil feels obligated to look after Wayne. They bury the past and live hoping it never comes back but "the past does cast shadows we can't outrun". Along the way people from their past appear in their lives bringing their past gazing right infrontin front of their eyes.
Wayne is accused of burglary that he claims not to have committed .As they go through this he reconnects with an old friend from the past, Tina .She plays a strong female character in the story. All this opens a great door to their past as with time Wayne's brother, Tyrone, also resurfaces.
What I loved most about the book was the page-turning suspence. Litherland mentions Stevie at the beginning of the story but we don't get to know what happens to him till the plot is far gone. The urge of getting to know what actually happened kept me glued to the story. I also loved the twists and the turns that the plot provides making the story more interesting plus how the authorauther rotates between the past and the present events. I admired how he developed his characters, especially Phil, who comes out sarcastic and full of humor.
I loved how the story felt real, like it was something I could actually relate to. The characters are well-developed making the book to be more realistic plus the dialogue present in the story. Litherland uses simple language making it easy to understand the plot without having to look up a lot of words in the dictionary. I loved how the story is a combination of many themes from crime to friendship and there is also a hint of romance making it more interesting. The book also contains humor making the book less boring.
The book has excessive profanity. It was professionally edited as I never came across any grammatical errors but despite the instances of profanity, I greatly loved the book. The story is a thriller; I rate Waves Break (on unknown shores) four out of four stars. I recommend the book to lovers of crime stories and mystery.
