How to be successful, think like a leader by M. Curtis McCoy is classified as a self-help book, it attempts to help the reader gain some perspective on their life and ideas and possible business ventures. It encourages the reader to better themselves and work on their ideas by learning as much as they can and surrounding themselves with positive influences.

I've rated the book 3 out of 4 stars due to the fact that, even though the idea on which the book is based and divided into chapters is good, it could have been written better. It tends to overly emphasize the dramatic in everyday situations and navigate toward stereotypes at times.
In addition, the book could have been better edited and proofread. This reduces the overall quality of the book.

What I did appreciate about this book is that the author based the entire book on his own experience and the fact that he fought hard for everything he has- his business success, his health, his relationships. His going through and survival of extreme hardships provides a solid foundation for this book and it is the main reason why the book is a worthwhile read.

Furthermore, the book doesn't simply feature the author's success story but also interviews with people who Curtis McCoy found inspirational and whose stories had a profound impact on him. He asked all the interviewees the same questions, and got a colourful array of answers in return. Every person has something valuable to say about success, about family, about God. The book seems to be directed slightly more to people who have a close relationship to God, but I don't find that off-putting for people who are atheists or agnostics, since the book is merely written by a man who values this relationship and doesn't offend people who may not have that or have that yet.

I would recommend this book to anyone feeling low and in need of a change in perspective, anyone who has failed at something and to anyone feeling worthless in the world. This book is a good read even if you aren't in any of those categories at the moment. We all have low points and Curtis McCoy reminds us to soldier on and not give up on our ideas and dreams.
