Richard Nedbal's Encoded: A Richard Braddock Mystery is an action packed technological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It has 3 parts and merges mystery, technology and politics all in one book.
When retired private investigator Richard Braddock is summoned to the White House by President Paul Elliot, he has no idea of the adventure awaiting him. Paul, who is an old classmate of Richard tells him the story of when he was an officer during the Vietnamese war and fathered a daughter with a Vietnamese officer. Braddock is now assigned to find the President's illegitimate daughter without leaking any information to the press. With the help of his close friend, a member of the DHS, FBI and a young hacker, he sets off on his mission. However, things take a turn when they stumble on an iniquitous plot that threatens the whole population of the United States. Will Braddock fall short on his mission or will he save the United States from annihilation?
Richard Nedbal has done a splendid job on the concepts and technical terms in the plot of the book. The incorporation of all this technological information with the plot of the book is done really well. It wasn't tedious like a non-fiction book, but instead, it flowed really nicely. The message that the author is conveying, about not taking anything for granted is very inspirational and something that we all need to hear.
The development of the characters and their personalities was well thought out and executed. It made it really fun to read, and I never got bored. The author's use of humour and sarcasm filled the book up very well. All the characters and their personalities were unique, and were in no way stereotypical.
Personally, what demoted this book was the fact that none of the plot twists were very shocking to me. As a mystery and thriller lover myself, I was quite disappointed with the plot twists in this book. The author could have worked more on the element of surprise and how to shock the readers. I had expected better coming from an author who has written such an adventurous and addictive novel.
Overall, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because of the lack of the shock factor in the plot twists. The book was professionally edited and had very little errors. It also didn't have many profane words or sexual content. The general plot and execution was exemplary. It has taught me a lot of things about today's technology as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves thriller, mystery, adventure and books related to technology.
