Review by Hopeless_Squish -- East Wind, 2nd edition
[Following is a volunteer review of "East Wind, 2nd edition" by Jack Winnick.]
The book East Wind, 2nd edition by Jack Winnick is an international spy thriller that has elements of real world international affairs. It is centered around Lara Edmond, an FBI agent who runs a surveillance program to catch online terrorism, and Uri Levin, who is a Mossad agent that runs field operations against terrorists. The USA is suddenly infiltrated by terrorists and is under the threat of nuclear annihilation, forcing the USA and Israel to work together. This is how the two main characters come to know one another; the two must work together to stop the terrorists from destroying the alliance between the USA and Israel, as well as prevent the loss of countless lives at the hands of the terrorist's attacks. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
One thing I liked about this book was the way Jack Winnick combined his knowledge of Middle East history and politics with what he knows as a storyteller. The book was written in a realistic way, leaving the reader to wonder just how possible this situation is in our current world. Another thing that I enjoyed was the author’s use of propaganda to tell the story; it helps to show the idea that the terrorist group wasn’t particularly crazy, they just fell for anti-US propaganda, paired with religious extremism.
Additionally, I enjoyed the diversity of the characters that Winnick brought into the story later on. These people had differing backgrounds as well, but were fully able to work together as functioning humans despite their different ideologies. The book kept me on my toes the whole way through and for that I give the book 4 stars instead of 3.
One thing I disliked about the book was that in some areas it felt a little rushed. An example of this is the way the ending just seemed to fall into place in a predictable way. It may have been because the book itself was so short, but it is not reason enough for me to give it 3 stars instead of 4.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the genres thriller or spy fiction. This book is an excellent blend of the two, with a little bit of politics mixed in. This book did not seem to have any errors in it, and was well edited. There were also some mild sexual innuendos between Lara and Uri, so I would not recommend this book to readers who are not mature enough for such content, but it was not nearly heavy enough to give the book a mature rating. Overall, this was a great, fast-paced read and I heavily recommend it to those who love a good thriller.
