Masters and Bastards is a sophisticated book about politics, racial inequality, and repeating history. This striking scenery is set in a different galaxy after humans fled the old planet Earth. There, they are in a war with another planet while awaiting an alien invasion, which could cost their extinction.

The advocate of the story, Andreas Marset, is blessed with powers that even he doesn’t know the strength of. Not only that but he is also implausibly smart, which attracted the attention of emperor Constantine causing an idea to sprout in his mind. Being paired off to the emperor's daughter took me by surprise as he is an Arpathian who is not even allowed to talk with Imperians, let alone mate with them. After the plan is completed he leaves Isabella to fight in the war against another planet. There, some of the extreme situations he will be in will trigger a part of him that he will have to grow accustomed to. In a world where you cant tell your enemies from your ally who will he trust?

Christopher j Pennington's use of description was phenomenal, as it was so easy to imagine everything perfectly. I flew through the pages finding it hard to put down. I could imagine the personalities of the characters so well, causing me to empathize with them. The story was easy to follow, however, it would be slow sometimes and the wording of certain things was quite difficult to interpret and there was at time inconsistency in events that occurred. However, these issues weren’t a great problem for me as the writing and plot over shone them.

My favorite character was as he did many praiseworthy things and his character was likable. However, the same could not be said for Vincenti, who I found frustratingly annoying and sly.As a person who isn't quite fond of political and military books, I was surprised to find that this book is so well balanced that I quite enjoyed it.

The book is written in the third tense though mostly from Andreas point of view. I really liked this, as it gives you a wider view of the whole story. Making other characters get a chance to come across to the reader too. Masters and bastards is not a cliche book, it has lots of plot twists and surprising cliff hangers which adds more tension and engages more with the reader.

I found nearly no mistakes, which lead me to believe that this book is edited and written well. However, there are many profanities in the book and racial comments. There are also quite a few erotic and explicit scenery which is why I would not recommend young people to read this book. I would recommend this book to science fiction and military lovers. Overall I would give this book a 3 out of 4 and I am excited to read his other book.
