Illustrated Short Fiction of William H. Coles: 2000-2016 is an amazing novel written by William H. Coles. This novel is a combination of different short stories. Each story came with the name of the person who illustrated it. I so much love the characterization in this novel. All places and events used in this novel are well described.
William kick-starts this great novel with a story titled The Gift. In this story, Catherine, the daughter of both Harold and Agnes, got pregnant at a young age of seventeen. Agnes was concerned about the shame and gossip that Catherine’s pregnancy will bring on her family, so she sent her away to a convent where she will give birth. One of the things I learn in this story is the fact that Catherine was fully aware of the young man responsible for her pregnancy, but she protected him because she knew of his inability to take responsibility for the pregnancy at that moment. This teaches us how to take responsibility for our actions, not blaming others for it. Also, it teaches us how parents should react to this kind of situation.
This novel has been written in such a way that readers will gain one or two things in each story. One of the stories that touch me is titled Crossing Over. This story was an illustration by Peter Healy. It’s a very short but educative story. It’s about Agnes Swaggert’s grandmother who teaches her granddaughter what she taught to be the way of the lord. She said even though she’s suffering, she should not give in. She makes use of Christ suffering for mankind as an illustration. I learn the real meaning of endurance, and it’s importance in this story.
Some people didn’t know the value of what they have until they lose it. This is one of the lessons I learned in this novel. How the author described the life of each character in each story is so amazing. I love the author’s sense of humor. Also, all the stories are well-illustrated, as there is no time in each story I lose track of any character or in understanding the story.
There is nothing I dislike in this novel. I enjoy the time I spent reading this novel. Throughout the entire novel, I only notice a few errors which make me believe that the novel is professionally edited. I rate Illustrated Short Fiction of William H. Coles: 2000-2016 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this novel to every lover of a magnificent novel.
