[rwc=id427478-125]4 out of 4 stars.[/rwc]How often do you read a book and easily envision it as a movie? I will have the popcorn, Diet Coke, and Raisinets on hand when [i]Rescued[/i] by E. Alan Fleischauer premiers on Netflix. Think vintage Spaghetti Western genre updated with strong, likable, and honorable male and female characters. I rate the book a [b]4 out of 4[/b] and recommend it to a broad audience for its universal appeal. Do you enjoy historical fiction, romance, action, quality character development, and cliff hanger plots? Then there is something here for you.
John Thurgood Thomas, JT to his friends, is called a good egg for his consistently demonstrated integrity during the 1800's in the wild American frontier. He is a gentleman, and I love his modern values transposed into a bygone era. JT is respectful to women, kind to animals, and colorblind to humanity, in an age where white men ruled the untamed west. In the opening chapter, JT spies four women in distress and comes to their rescue. The west was rough, and lives were cheap - JT's skill with his .50 caliber Sharps buffalo gun quickly results in gruesome casualties. I imagined how Hollywood Director Quentin Tarantino would execute these scenes with ridiculously gory visuals and make it fun. For the squeamish, be prepared for limbs separated from bodies.
The plot takes an unexpected twist resulting in JT partnering with one of the women to pursue villains - murderous bank robbers - to correct terrible wrongs. Fun dialog, strong physical attraction, and mutual respect make this character pairing enjoyable and believable. I found Fleischauer's dialog credible in both playful banter and serious scenes where the characters are experiencing love or loss. I also appreciate Fleischauer's use of inner dialog for his characters – which he executes equally well with both men and women. Fleischauer nicely shares small insights into the main characters' backgrounds throughout the book to explain qualities and decisions. This gradual personality development is what I like most about the book.
In the last 30 pages, everything seemed to come together too well for the main characters, and I started to resent Fleischauer for an improbable fairy tale ending. Boy, was I wrong. Another twist compelled me to finish the book to find out how the story ends for JT. I was all ready to admonish Fleischauer for wrapping up the story with a pretty red bow, and instead, he blew the story up and took my breath away. Well played, Fleischauer, well played. I don't have any negatives about the book- it’s fun and a fast read. There is no course language or graphic sex scenes. I found a few grammatical errors at the beginning, and then I stopped noticing - the story captivated me. There was nothing that suggested to me to reduce the rating from the top score.
Hey, Bradley Cooper! When your agent brings you this script, you should read it. You'd be perfect as the good egg JT.
