The Weeping Woman of Putten by Alyce Bailey is a fictional account of the true events that unfolded in Putten, a small town in The Netherlands, in October 1944. The story begins when a small group of resistance fighters attacked a vehicle carrying German officers. After a German officer was killed during this attack, the Nazi soldiers retaliated by rounding up the majority of the men in town and shipping them off to labor camps. Janneke, a young nurse who witnesses this terrible event, uses her nursing career and her own experience in the resistance movement to help her town recover from the shock of the events and to bring the lost men home. Janneke is especially determined to help her town because her own uncle and cousin are among the men deported to labor camps. While attempting to find out what has happened to her lost family members, Janneke herself is sent to a labor camp for her involvement in the resistance.

There are a few things that I found enjoyable in The Weeping Woman of Putten. One thing that I liked is that I had an opportunity to learn about an event in history that I had never heard of before. As I was reading, I was inspired to research the Netherlands town of Putten and the shocking events that took place there. I felt deeply saddened for the residents of Putten that they had to endure such a heinous Nazi war crime; yet heartened that they were somehow able to pick up and carry on with their lives. Second, I liked that the story covered different character viewpoints. It showed how different members of a family were affected by the events in Putten. The story flowed well between the different viewpoints and gave insight into each character’s struggles.

What I disliked most about The Weeping Woman of Putten was that it was an emotional read. Knowing that the story was based on a true historical event made it challenging to read at times. It is unbelievable that the Nazis were that cruel to a whole town just because of a small group of citizens who wanted to liberate their town from Nazi control.

I rate The Weeping Woman of Putten 4 out of 4 stars. I give it 4 stars because it was very well-written. The characters were well-developed and it was easy to feel empathy for the tragic struggles that they endured. It flowed well between character viewpoints and how well they dealt with their situations. Even though it was a fictional work, the historical background of Putten and World War II events seemed to have been well-researched.

I think that The Weeping Woman of Putten is very educational and will appeal to readers who have studied World War II and the Holocaust. The story delves into how a whole town was affected by Nazi hatred and cruelty. Even if a reader has not studied World War II, the story does a great job of explaining what life was like under Nazi control and in the labor camps.
