Review by vikinghawk -- Guardian of Deceit
Guardian Of Deceit was written by William H. Coles. This is a hard book for me to talk about because the plot kept changing. It starts off kind of fun with a kid named Darwin Hastings, whose parents died in a car accident, moving in with his famous cousin Luther Pinelli. Luther was the quarterback for a professional football team in New York. He had a mansion with security people, servants, cool cars, a rec room, and an Olympic sized swimming pool. Then it goes off to other plots from there. There's lots of dating and affairs going on but it's not really a romance book.
Luther was dating a famous pop singer named Sweeney Pale. She was right around the same age as Darwin and they became good friends. Luther had Darwin work for him to earn money. I thought this is what the book was going to be about but it took off in many different directions. At times I would forget about certain characters because they weren't talked about. Then all of a sudden they were there again. It confused me sometimes, but was easy to figure out. It was nice to read a book with very few mistakes in it. It makes it so much easier to read.
I would give the book 3 out of 4 stars. I wouldn't give it 4 stars because I didn't like the way it ended and because there was so much going on that it was hard to focus on what was happening. It ended with so much unfinished business. I feel like I needed to know more. I didn't give it 2 stars because it got me interested right from the start. I liked most of the characters and themes within the book, I just wish the author would have expanded on what Luther was up to. Reading this book was not a waste of my time. I really liked it.
What I liked most about this book were the characters like Granny, Sweeney and Darwin. Those three kept me interested in the book. What I disliked most were the untold endings for some of the characters. I was left to wonder what happened to too many people. Too many questions left unanswered.
I would say that people who like a good mystery with a lot of different kind of people should read this book. People looking for action and intrigue probably wouldn't want to read it. There's no dangerous situations for people to get out of. There's no spies or terrorists in this book.
