Imagine living in a world where nuclear annihilation from the Middle East was a constant fear. A world where standing up for your own beliefs, like the right for a country to exist, could bring upon nuclear attack. For the protagonists of East Wind (second edition) by Jack Winnick this was their reality.

Uri and Lara, the protagonists, are racing against a 5 day deadline to stop a devastating nuclear attack on the US. While on their mission, sparks begin to fly between the two young, single people and soon not only are they fighting to keep their country safe but to get back to each other.

The ideas throughout East Wind were cohesive yet sometimes hard to follow. The book switches perspectives quite regularly, and the reader has to work to figure out who is speaking when it switches. Despite this, the ideas on the story line flowed together nicely, the way Winnick was able to show the protagonist's mindset and view with the contrasting point of view of the antagonist was fascinating, and led to a more interesting book overall.

One of the best things about the whole book and a major strength of the author’s is that the characters are incredibly relatable. For example, Lara, one of the protagonists. She is a hard working FBI agent that doesn't have time for a social life or dating. How many of us are so absorbed in our work we say we don't have time to go out and have a social life? This is a huge strength, one of my only critiques would be to make the story easier to follow by adding the name of the characters’ point of view to the top of each chapter. This book helped me realize that we should always stick to our beliefs and not change them when we feel threatened, and that our convictions, what we believe, are the strongest weapons we have.

I would rate this book 3 out of 4 and strongly recommend you read East Wind (second edition) by John Winnick. The cohesive storyline, masterful plot, and relatable characters make this a perfect book to read when you are bored with the mundane tasks of day to day life and need some excitement.
