Mixed Blessings by J.M.Muse
In the book, we are first being introduced to Kimberly Solberg who is a mixed-race girl of both the Mexican and Jewish origins. She is a girl looking to find love and acceptance as illustrated in the book. She goes to Mexico where her father resides to find her roots. Kimberly's father is a wealthy man and has married an American woman by the name Magdalene. Through the marriage, he has two children; Hermando and Juanita. Once in Mexico, Kimberly fears that she may get attached to her father's wealth and not want to go back to California. On the first day of her visit, Hermando takes her clubbing where she has a rough encounter seeing as she is drugged and almost sexually abused. Hermando intercedes and commands his men to kill the guy, of which Kimberly witnesses.
The main themes of the book are race, religion, and riots. Mixed Blessings shines light upon what goes on in some parts of the World. Racism is a huge problem in real life. There have been large numbers of deaths over the years.
J.M.Muse brings out forced marriage later on in the book. It seems a bit far fetched though in such a way that hundreds of families are paid off just to marry/get married. The major role of the men after the marriage is to impregnate their wives to increase the population of blacks in the community. This scenario is really hard to picture and seems a bit cliche.
Later on, we get to meet the lead character; Michael Kublai Khan who is a Pastor from the House of Jeremiah Temple. His church consists of people of African descent. He is a neat, organized, and athletic built man with a great sense of fashion. He is brought out as a very opinionated and commanding man. He is trying to find his way into political power of which he has to go through trials and decide what he is willing to sacrifice to achieve that power. Ahmed, Kim's boyfriend runs off from the mass wedding since he had promised Kim that he would not go forward with the marriage. He is torn in between honoring his pastor or remaining loyal to his girlfriend.
This book would mostly attract a middle-aged audience since the younger audience might find it quite boring and confusing. I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because at the beginning a reader who does not know Spanish is left clueless on some of the phrases used. As the book progresses one gets a bit confused on some of the personas. The book was well edited since there were no typos or grammatical errors.
