Review by Melinda2020 -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
Sarah Cooley is a 13-year-old girl that already experienced the hardship of life. No parents, no grandmother that wanted her. Tom, her grandfather, did not know of her existence. Yet, on a stormy night, she stood on her grandfather’s doorstep.
Tom always wondered why his daughter ran away. She was only 15 years old. Maybe, one day, Sarah can help him with his unanswered questions.
For Tom, it was not an option to cancel his camping trip into the unforgiving landscape of the Olympic Peninsula wilderness. Just because he suddenly had a granddaughter. Time was running out. Threats of mining and his unfinished quest that started 45 years ago was of the utmost importance. Not visiting his grandfather’s grave was a horrible mistake as he fought against all odds to resolve his family secret before he loses his last chance.
Against better judgment, Tom and his friends took Sarah with them. Starting their backpacking trip with Sarah, that has one nasty character, with zero knowledge of camping in the wild. In the evenings around the campfire, they shared legend stories. One fine spring day Sarah saw something strange in the forest; nobody believed her. Trying to convince everybody, she ran away into this enormous mass of a forest. A forest so full of magic, history, and legends. Or was it a place of myths, ancient stories, and ancient people. Everybody started frantically looking for Sarah, but where could she have disappeared to.
After finding Sarah, she told them of a legendary story about an Indian girl by name of Strong Heart. Strong Heart was not just living her life, she also had the will to survive no matter what. Embarking on a sea journey that sounds crazy. A youthful girl on a small boat traveling hundreds of miles. Every day, an unknown day to fight for survival. Strong Heart at her age had maturity, grit and the will to survive no matter what.
The novel, Strong Heart, was the first publication and Adrift was the second publication that Charlie Sheldon wrote.
My compliment goes to a writer that did not just write a novel, but also a story with actual events attached to it. This makes this legendry story comes alive as if it was a true-life experience. It is full of exact information entwined into a colorful story. The creativity of the writer to use raw, boring facts, and changing it into a delicate, heartfelt story was magnificent.
I will give the novel Strong Heart a healthy 3 out of 4 stars. The amount of effort, dedication and work that went into this story tells me a lot about Charlie Sheldon talent as a writer. I highly recommend this book to any person who loves adventure, survival, and a legendry story.
