Review by Kristabella -- From Drift to SHIFT
This is a review of From Drift to SHIFT: How Change Can Bring New Meaning and Happiness to Your Work and Life by Jody B. Miller. In today’s world, change is very rampant but many personalities are resistant to it. The fear of the unknown or the fear of taking a leap of faith is enough to keep a person living life as is. This book immediately grabbed my attention as I was currently in need of additional motivation to continue steering a new chapter in my life.
Miller definitely has an impressive résumé with twelve years under her belt as a professional Job/ Life Coach and Executive Recruiter. She also wrote two other books which aim to aide persons in acquiring jobs. Her experience has proven to me that she has the capacity to write such literature and relate to many people. The purpose of this book is to demonstrate to persons that they can overcome any hurdle and achieve both personal and job contentment. The goal is to achieve shift which would bring a person outside of their comfort zone and into new places of belonging.
The book is segregated into four main compartments and are further broken down into chapters which tell stories of real people and how shifting changed the course of their lives. Miller also included life instances of her own which gave the reader a sense of relatability. The main compartments begin with a change quote, followed by a specific definition which relates well to the broken down chapters in the book. The chain of stories begins with Serita, who was in the foster care system in Canada. Her biological parents eventually had a son, which made Serita exit the system and go back to living with them. Her parents did not care about her and both her and her brother grew up delinquent.
The course that changed young Serita’s life was being a part of her school’s water polo team where she developed a family relationship with her teammates. She also had a Physics professor who believed in her and it allowed her academic life to blossom. Serita did not permit her unfortunate start to define the rest of her life. The chapter also included Miller’s experience of growing up in a family with little money and doing whatever it took to survive. She also included survivor stories of influential people starting off as delinquents and changing the course of their lives. The comparisons made the chapter engaging and gave a sense of assurance that embracing change improves life.
Some other powerful stories consist of surviving and conquering cancer, being immediately dismembered and still finding the will to save others and being depressed but eventually finding peace. I like that this book illustrated different stories of people from all walks of life which will give any reader the sense of relatability at some point. From Drift to SHIFT can be enjoyed by everyone, the essence of what the book is trying to achieve with making the difficult change is captured and will motivate and inspire others to make those necessary changes in their lives.
The book is professionally edited and there were no typographical errors. I did notice that there was an appendix towards the end of the book, but there were multiple documents. The word should be changed to appendices. I rate this literature 3 out of 4 stars and I definitely would recommend it to anyone who is looking for the extra motivation in their lives. With this inspiration they can make the big changes and shift into the person that can overcome their obstacles, thereby achieving both personal and job contentment.
