This is a review of the book East Wind, 2nd edition by Jack Winnick

The Islamic terrorists once again are up to no good and plotting against the west and Israel. Uri is a Mossad agent in a secret commando group that ferrets out any people with hostile intent towards Israel and the west in general. He is Mossad/CIA trained and really is the best there is. He dispatches a group of potential threats and uncovers some intelligence that has far reaching implications, especially for the US, Israel's greatest benefactor. His superiors assign him to travel to the US and work with the FBI.

Lara Edmond is a brilliant FBI computer specialist and competent field agent. Her specialty is breaking into coded web pages and sorting through reams of data to figure out what the bad guys are up to and put a stop to it. She is smart, beautiful and tenacious in her work.

When Uri and Lara are assigned to work together it has a great synergistic effect by bringing his expertise in Arab language/culture and her computer skills together with great results. Together they figure out how the terrorists are communicating and how to possibly get them to reveal their intentions and targets.

The terrorists sneak a bomb into a major US city and detonate it with devastating results. Uri and Lara are too late for this event but the terrorists don't stop there. They issue an ultimatum that is clearly too much for the US to swallow, so the two agents are turned loose to find these men before more horror can occur. Can Uri and Lara beat the odds and the clock? Will they fall in love? Read this book to find out.

This book starts off literally with a BANG! The beginning is fast paced, poignant, and hard hitting. It really grabs you by the shirt! Unfortunately the author then reverts to a slower plodding pace for the next 50 percent of the book. He does a decent job of character building but this leads to a lot of background which has little action. The knowledge of the author in Middle East history and the differences in East vs West cultures is evident in his extensive and lengthy narratives. It is however very readable and the action does pick up later on, you just have to get through the slower parts.

The author uses many character points of view to good effect but sometimes the writing is confusing in time and place. For example one character when thinking about how to make a bomb comes up with an idea to try out and goes out into the hills "several miles from campus" This character did attend school in North Carolina so one assumes this it what is referenced by "campus", however he states he made the prototype in his shop in Alabama. This first test goes bad but he comes back and tries again but this time he "goes into the desert to his first test place" and tries again. It left me wondering where exactly he was doing this. In NC, Alabama or some desert place? In another example our intrepid FBI agents leave Washington DC for Los Angeles after midnight and arrive at their hotel in LA at 10pm the same evening, poor timeline control. This is the main reason I gave this book 3 out of 4 stars. It caused some confusion which made it necessary to re-read some parts to clarify the storyline.

East Wind is very well edited as I could find very few grammatical or spelling errors, kudos to the editor. There is only one instance of profanity and one scene with sexual content, but it is not terribly graphic in nature. I would recommend this book to late teenagers and up.

Overall I did enjoy this book. I did have to backtrack sometimes to reorient myself to the story but that was a minor distraction. I would read more books by this author.
