The Trial of Connor Padget , by Carl Roberts is a story of a civil lawyer, Jack Carney. When Jack’s lifelong friend Connor was filmed on a live news broadcast shooting a man in police custody called Pohl, Jack stands up despite everyone’s advice to fight for Connor. Jack and Connor have to struggle through many challenges to battle for Connors life and convince everyone around him that he shot out of defence for his son and to protect his family, as Pohl had recently kidnapped his son and had an affair with his wife. Jack puts his career and friendships on the line to help Connor but also makes and improves other friendships throughout the book. Jack is not a criminal lawyer which puts pressure on himself and his law firm.

The Trial of Connor Padget is a fascinating story which describes the life of a lawyer and the processes that they must go through without getting too in-depth or complicated and losing the story. The story is suspenseful and leaves you wondering what is going to happen. I really enjoyed the storyline and felt for both Connor and Jack throughout the book.

While Roberts doesn’t go into much detail about the majority of the wide range of characters, Jack Carney is a well-developed character, giving us enough information while not getting too caught up in detail. Most of the time, it felt like I had enough detail about the rest of the characters, however, I sometimes feel like a few more details were needed to make the story a bit clearer. This is the one thing I disliked about the book. This may have been done in an attempt to show that Jack was alone in protecting his friend, but I think slightly more detail, especially about Mary-Beth and Adrienne (Connor and Jack’s wives) would have improved this.

Due to the slight vagueness of the characters, I would give this book 3 out of 4 stars. The rest of the book is excellent, with a great storyline and is very well written, I just struggled slightly to connect to the characters due to the vagueness.

The book is from Connor’s perspective and is in the first person, telling the story as it happens with the occasional flashback, usually of Jack’s and his past. The book was well edited with no mistakes and flows well.
