Review by dimencia -- Click Fraud @ Sonic Ping
Click Fraud @ Sonic Ping by Orlando Stephenson is a mix of action novel and detective story about corruption. Personally speaking, I did not find the end result appealing, please, bear it in mind and excuse me.
In my opinion, if we are talking about action novels, there are two iconic types of main character: "good" and "bad". "Good" person is speaking rationally, want to save every living thing from its inevitable doom and, usually, is on good terms with public services. On the other side there is a "bad" character, whose actions are based solely on his self-centered needs; we watch, how not a law-abiding citizen, who is out of tune with his inner self, still manages to save the World. Well, they are certainly cliché types of heroes, but they do attract a reader with their extreme views. Click Fraud @ Sonic Ping couldn't get bonuses from this proven method, characters came out boring and "gray".
There are some inconsistencies as well. For example, Rodger Truscott, the narrator’s best friend, is described as a very rational and then as very aggressive person. He controls himself quite well, and he can not control his facial expression, while his friend can. On the other side, he is more, let’s say, “stable” then Daryl Morgan, the narrator. Who is in love with a wife, but right after her death discusses business with his comrades, who drunks too much after packing her belongings and then moves on like nothing happened. If some changes were made, such as Rodger’s and Daryl's tempers were switched or Rodger was a narrator instead of Daryl, then the plot could become more realistic and adequate.
While characters are not cliché and it doesn’t do them any good, the plot is but in a bad sense. There is a Russian antagonist and there are Arabs who buy women, there is a person who is a hacker and at the same time a warrior and there is a corrupt police officer. If Germans were here too, they wouldn’t stand out much.
I think some unnecessary events could easily be cut out without any harm to the main story line. In my opinion, if we are talking about books, every author’s decision should make his masterpiece better, plot interesting and characters memorable. "Quality over quantity" should prevail. After all the feeling will be remembered, not how many words there were.
All in all the book lacks editing: for example, chapters’ numeration should be done with numbers, formatting should be fixed. I will not recommend this book for young people, because it contains sex scenes, gore and some questionable speeches about morality. I rate this book 1 out of 4 stars, but don’t stop you from enjoying it yourself.
