Review by Hip+ -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
Book #1 of a 3 book series, Strong Heart is a captivating read about how the stories of our family’s history can shape, mold, and thread together generations. Led by Tom, his Native American friends, and his newly discovered 13-year old granddaughter, they journey deep into the Pacific Northwest in search of the uncommon gravesite of his grandfather. Eager to clean up the burial site and return an item that may very well be an ancient artifact, Tom and his cohorts quickly discover the potential for adventure, rich history, and a little bit of mystery and magic.
Charlie Sheldon’s Strong Heart creates an opportunity for a present day tale while weaving in a second story, which is potentially set tens of thousands of years ago when the giant short-faced bear roamed free. Combining adventure, mystery, and even some archaeology lessons, this book keeps you engrossed and wanting to learn more.
Initially, what I disliked most about this book is that there seemed to be some early struggles with context and editing, as a good bit of the dialogue comes off flat and emotionless. There are times when the scene changes or a new character is presented where it feels oddly sudden and without sufficient context. In other words, sometimes the transitions are a bit rough around the edges. Ultimately, the issues improve as you read through the book and you will find that you adjust to the author’s style of writing.
I genuinely liked the concept of a story within a story, learning about Native American history, and the archaeological lessons. This book teaches you the value of knowing your friends from your enemies, the ups and downs of perseverance, and that some history is best served by the storytellers around us!
I would recommend this book to everyone who loves adventure and learning new things. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
