Make Me Tick is a fast-paced mystery novel. Jo, one of the main characters, is a shameless flirt who’s young, full of life and has many mysteries up her sleeve. She makes an unlikely duo with Jim Kirby who is a 32-year-old antique assessor who gets caught up with her whirlwind of a life after saving her from a burning building. Jo and Jim work together to find out who started the fire that burnt down her apartment building and why. Along the way they meet the Inspector. The Inspector is no ordinary police officer and definitely gives off Sherlock vibes with his old-fashioned way of speech and quick wittedness. Alongside the Inspector is his ‘monkey’ Sargent Miller: a police officer who works for him. Throughout the tumultuous journey of uncovering mysteries, the many jerking plot twists that are laced into the story drastically shift the dynamics between the four characters. Also, be aware that parts of the book do get racy, however there aren’t details on what happens, the intentions are merely implied and then the book hastily moves on to the next moment.

I rate this book 3 out of 4. I definitely recommend it as a light-hearted quick read. Something that can entertain you for a day at least as it isn’t such a long book and is written in a very informal and relaxed style causing it to feel like an easy read. It’s extremely comedic and its characters are very charming. The very first chapter is a great hooking start to the book. The disoriented atmosphere of the chapter makes you feel as disoriented as Jo is. Due to such an effective start, as soon as you start reading, you don’t stop because Nick Carr never slows, he uses the comedic and electric relationship between Jo and Jim to carry straight on into the next event, consistently hitting you with new information about the case, always keeping you on edge waiting for the next revelation.

However, I didn’t give a full 4 out of 4 rating because due to there being a lack of opening speech marks every now and again, it does become confusing and makes it hard to decipher who’s speaking in that moment. Scene changes aren’t always very clear either and can cause whiplash making you think you might have missed something, which you haven’t. The characters aren’t thoroughly described, aside from Jo who’s eyes are described as a gray/blue, this leaves a lot of imagination as to how each individual character looks like and while I personally enjoy being able to imagine the characters in any way I want, I also want some sort of indication as to how they might look like. Although, this is just a personal preference and may differ from reader to reader.

Overall, Make Me Tick is worth the read if you’re a young adult looking for something fun and amusing. The characters are constantly cracking jokes even in dire situations, which is guaranteed to make you laugh every once in a while. However, if you’re looking for something more complex with darker emotions, this book may not be for you. In any case, I enjoyed reading it and I hope whoever decides to read it does so too.
