Review by OllyM -- Ana by Gary Hope
Ana by Gary Hope is a romantic fiction about a man, Noah who seems to be in love with two women; Ana and Dorothy. Noah works as a columnist for Salt Lake Newspaper. His responses to his readers are sometimes funny, sometimes insulting and at times, give good advice. It was during one of his responses to his readers he met Ana. Little by little, the email exchanged between them becomes more constant and personal. Although he hasn't met Ana or seen any of her pictures, he is quite sure he is in love with her.
Dorothy is a park ranger whom Noah first met during one of his hikes. One thing led to another that made them start seeing each other more often. Dorothy was sure Noah can't have any feelings towards her whatsoever. Noah, on the other hand, didn't even see her as an attractive lady the first time he saw her but there was an appeal about her that made him fall for her than the day before. After a particular hiking adventure with Dorothy, he couldn't seem to stop thinking about her and the spark he feels for her.
Now Noah seems to be at crossroads with both Ana and Dorothy. He doesn't know who to choose between Ana which he doesn't know what she looks like or Dorothy who is nearby but no assurance she feels the same way about him.
What I like most about this book is that it is full of surprises, plots, and twists which seem to capture the reader's attention, the more you progress with the book. Also, there are some questions and answers from Noah's column which a reader can actually learn from and relate to.
What I dislike most about this book is that the questions and answers column seems to take, if not more than half of the whole novel, in other words, it is much and totally unnecessary. It got to the extent that I started skipping the column part as I was getting too bored and tired of reading it. The novel ought to be about the romance story of Noah, not the way he does his work as a columnist. I also didn't like the way the story ended, leaving the readers on a cliffhanger. I don't think the novel is part of a series which makes the ending dislikeable.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. The novel is more or less an average book which makes 3 stars too much for it. Although I enjoyed the love story, there are still things I disliked about the novel. I noticed a few grammatical errors while reading the novel. Some of Noah's reply in the book seems insulting and may therefore not appeal to people who take offense easily. Also, there is a high tolerance for beer in the novel so I would not recommend this novel to children who might be tempted to try it and also, to people addicted to beer. The book contains a mild mature content and will, therefore, appeal to people who want a light and easygoing novel to read.
