Mock my Words, by Chandra Shekhar, is a wonderful story of the personal experiences of created characters David, Laura, and Melissa. David and Laura are married and struggling through life’s issues. Their difference in cultural backgrounds makes steering their relationship an added struggle. Their expectations about their relationship are based on personal preferences. David finds himself in a new job and has to learn to cope with his verbal language barrier while inspiring youth for love of classic literature. The story dives into a disheartening past of Laura’s first marriage and the reasons for her commitment to David and a strong commitment to work. Melissa is a promising student who receives advice from David and begins her life’s pursuits.

This story capitalizes on human desires to be accepted. Mentally the characters struggle to find themselves. I like traversing the story with David. He struggles with what he has presumed as Laura’s expectations from him and finds it difficult to constantly appease her. David learns the importance of his feelings and desires. Interestingly, we get to see how Laura is caught up in the corporate world, diving into a difficult heroine job assignment. The reader learns how perspective and emotions are brought to a clash in this heartfelt story.

I enjoyed Mock my Words and looked forward to my time reading it. The characters Shekhar developed I was easily able to connect with; I felt for them during the emotional unrest throughout the chapters. I was able to connect with both David and Laura. I was better able to engage due to the relate-ability of their marriage circumstances. I also really appreciated that Shekhar added the cultural depth to widen the gap between the couple. Often our expectations vary due to our upbringing and our life experiences, which is especially seen with David.

There were no areas that I didn’t like about this book. The only real critic is I would have loved to hear the end of the story with more of David’s outlook not just Melissa’s. Shekhar evenly distributed his time from Laura’s perspective and David’s perspective throughout most of the book. Towards the end, we hear mainly from Melissa, who was refreshing, but I missed hearing David’s view. This, merely, in my opinion, would have added to the story but by no means is the story dampened as it is written.

I would rate Mock my Words a 4 out of 4 stars. It was well written, the story didn’t drag and it also didn’t skip important details. The varying perspectives added a new light for the situations presented and Shekar was tasteful when addressing difficult subjects. I would recommend this book for anyone who likes a feel-good story or not an overly sentimental love story. I would love to read more from Shekar’s works. Mock my Words is a beautiful story, especially it’s ending.
