- Latest Review: The McCoys Before The Feud by Thomas McCoy
Review by Cathyann9459 -- The McCoys Before The Feud
I thoroughly enjoy reading about history, especially the way things may have happened many years ago. When I seen the book, The McCoy's Before The Feud , by Thomas A. McCoy, I could not wait to begin reading it. Not only because it was about the historic McCoy's but it was written by a descendent of the McCoy family. Everything I had read or watched before this book had been on the feud between the Hatfield's and McCoy's. Seeing this one was written about them before the famous feud peaked my interest even more.
The book starts right after the war between the North ran by General Ulysses S. Grant, and the South ran by General Robert E. Lee. After the South surrendered to the North, General Grant had his men take everything possible from the Southern people so they would not be able to rebuild their lives once the war was completely over. As one can imagine, this did not sit well with the Southerners and Tommy McCoy thought there must be something him and his kinfolk could do to change that and take back what belonged to them.
As their plans were being made, questions came to my mind. If or when they carried out these plans, how many people would lose their lives? Would the McCoy's be able to pull off what they wanted to do? What would happen if they were recognized? As each chapter was being read, I could almost close my eyes and see each one being played out on a big screen. That was how real this book was to me.
The book also surprised me by showing a softer side of Tommy McCoy. Before the war he was in love with a girl named Terry. When Tommy told her he was leaving to join the war, Terry told him she may not be there when he returned. That also drew some questions. Would Terry be there when he returned? Would they be able to pick up where they left off before the war or had they became strangers?
I enjoyed this book and give it a 4 out of 4 stars . It is an easy book to read for any age to enjoy. I may have been born in the North in PA. but I lived in Va. and NC both and I know how things are different between the North and the South and they have always been that way. This book had me rooting for the McCoy's to try to take back what is rightfully theirs and to the families that lost everything. I will most defiantly be reading the other two books in this series. I want to thank the author for such a great book, even if it did come from his own imagination.
