Review by pks192005 -- The MECE Muse by Christie Lindor
The MECE Muse: 100+ selected practices, unwritten rules, and habits of great consultants by Christie Lindor is a non-fiction book meant to be a guide to the consulting world. It is a very informative book for any consultant. Although written from an IT perspective, the author’s tips and perspective is equally applicable for all domains.
The book consists of three sections. The first section deals with the mindset of great consultants and highlights the qualities which enable a consultant to excel. In the second section, the author explains the characteristics of successful consulting. She explains the tools and professionalism required to consistently deliver successful deliverables to the client. The third section talks about the consulting career and the inherently temporary nature of the work in this field, which mandatorily requires that consultants invest in themselves and prepare for future technologies and potential disruptors.
The book is written in very simple language and I did not come across any errors. This is a very professionally written and edited book. The author’s style is very informal, has personal experiences and anecdotes at several places and makes for a very interesting read. Although this is a very serious topic and is a non-fiction book, yet, due to her writing style and experiences generously included, I found the book very interesting and engaging. I happen to be from the IT industry and was able to very well relate to the book.
Although the book is essentially focussed on consultants, I believe the author’s insights will be applicable for any professional. For example, the author’s tip for improving professional networking would be applicable to any professional. Taking accountability for your career is another such fact, which every professional must acknowledge and plan for. The author has emphasized the importance of work-life balance. Also, the quotes at the beginning of every chapter are very relevant.
Overall, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I very much enjoyed reading the book and was particularly impressed by the candor and honesty with which the author has shared her personal experiences. I would suggest this book to all consultants, irrespective of their domain. It will definitely be much more relatable for IT consultants. The book would also be suitable for young professionals who have just started their careers or even college graduates who can get a very good idea of the consulting career and prepare for it.
