Review by Zaiba_fk -- The Sound of Spring by G.X. Chen
The sound of spring by G.X.Chen is an apt retelling of the Cultural Revolution that took place in the Great Republic of China during the 1970’s. It paints a clear and vivid picture in the mind of the readers as to what might have been the conditions at the time, the hardships they faced and more importantly the changes that occurred along with onslaught of Cultural Revolution.
It follows the life of Chun Ming, a 22 year old girl who works at the factory along with her boyfriend Zhu Tan. It portrays well the eagerness and excitement of young love. She is living a living a peaceful life up until her cousin and his girlfriend visiting from Shanhgai introduce her to the then considered counterterrevolutionary ideologies. She is exposed to various views the people around her have on these ideologies. Her father is a chief engineer at a computer research institute who has been labelled as a counterrevolutionary because of his work. It shows where people’s loyalties lie once the government has branded you. How in hard times the loved faces disappeared and the least expected faces provide comfort.
There were many aspects of the book that appeased to me. The simplicity with which G.X.Chen has portray the changes that the Cultural Revolution has bought to the country and to the everyday lives of the people.
• The character of Chun Ming’s father is especially remarkable. The sheer dedication and hard work that he shows towards his job is amazing, and the fact that he will fight for what is right even though it could tarnish his reputation is exceptional.
• The presence of a strong female character, to which Chun Ming could look up to, was very notable. The ending given to the character stood well with her attribute of fighting and striving for what is right, no matter the consequences.
• The way the author has highlighted the importance of education and gaining knowledge is very good. It shows how the coming of the Cultural Revolution effected the academic situation of the entire country.
• The evolution of the character of the Chun Ming is beautiful. How she evolves from the love struck girl, whose life was confined to work and her boyfriend to a determined and dedicated woman who has now dreams and aspirations of her own and works hard towards achieving them.
The book was written in simple language, understandable to all. The book was edited exceptionally well. There were no grammatical errors noted. The book did not consist any erotic scenes, vulgar languages and profanities.
I will rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. It had a very good backdrop, good plotline, strong characters and very good writing and well edited. It would appeal to people who are interested in history fiction. I would not recommend it to people who do not enjoy reading about history and society.
