Review by kelso9326 -- The Touch by Robert Flynn III
The Touch tells the story of Gabriel Nunez. With no memory of his parents, Gabriel has lived in an orphanage his whole life. He’s diagnosed autistic and seems that way to many around him but it’s something entirely different. He hears the voice of a supernatural being. It keeps him reclused and wanting to be alone from everyone else. The voice gives him powers that he can wield through touch. Throughout the book, Gabriel is drawn to do and say things that the voice tells him to do. There are 3 other characters with troubled lives as well that the voice also speaks to. Throughout the story, their lives intertwine with the voice leading them together.
This story, written by Robert Flynn III, was so different than any other supernatural story I’ve ever read. Most have some kind of protagonist trying to “win”. This one didn’t seem to have one. Were we supposed to believe that Gabriel was supposed to be the protagonist? The stories of the characters seemed like they were going nowhere. Near the end of the story, the plot seems to thicken but it’s like the other characters are left behind when new ones are introduced. This book desperately needs a sequel in my opinion. I was left so disappointed by the ending by how vague it was.
Usually, I have a few things I enjoy about a book but this one wasn't a great read for me. One positive was a small nod to religion and mythology towards the end of the book. If the author had worked for it, it could have been a fantastic addition to the story. Unfortunately, it was so short that it didn’t seem to fit with the rest of the book.
One of my biggest dislikes of this book was the way the story flipped from character to character. It was sometimes confusing and jumbled. I think it could have used more page breaks or chapters to break things up. There were also lots of extremely long dialogues and thoughts from the characters. I felt like I had to reread some passages just to make sure I was getting all of the information.
I’m rating this book a 1 out of 4. I didn’t like reading it, and it took so long for me to finish. There are awkward sentences and the whole book was difficult to read because of how drawn out it all seemed. If I had to recommend The Touch for anyone I’d say that people who enjoy supernatural stories might enjoy it. Unfortunately, I was not one of those people.
