America constantly aims to protect citizens from terrorist attacks both land-based and through the internet. While the American government does a terrific job of monitoring terrorist sites, oftentimes sites slip through the cracks. The likelihood of an attack on home soil again is terrifying and highly probable. Cynthia and Dan: Cyber War by Dorothy May Mercer takes a look at the war on terrorism using technology. Cynthia and Dan: Cyber War is a fictional novel with political and technological aspects.

If the opportunity became available to help combat the war on terrorism, would you take it? Would the fear of the unknown stop you or motivate you? Cynthia Patterson and her brother Glenn use every means at their disposal to help fight terrorism. Cynthia is head of security for a Senator in Washington D.C. and Glenn is a private detective with extensive means. Together with the help of two computer students, they take on cyber terrorism. Running parallel with the terrorist aspect is a romantic storyline involving Cynthia. Will the terrorists win the day and Cynthia find love, or will the terrorist prevail and Cynthia be single forever?

As head of security for a Senator, Cynthia has a busy life. Cynthia runs a team of women who help her to investigate and put a stop to potential threats. Cynthia also has a side business with her brother Glenn discovering and shutting down cyber nest. While not married, Cynthia is in a long-term relationship that has become complacent. When a drone lands on the White House lawn, Cynthia encounters a mysterious stranger which leads to a tense whirlwind romance. While Cynthia has never felt this way before, she feels guilty and suspicious of the timing revolving around the drone landing. As head of security, Cynthia has to investigate the drone landing and the new mysterious man. What she finds doesn’t add up and now Cynthia must decide whether to listen to her heart or her head.

I rate Cynthia and Dan: Cyber War by Dorothy May Mercer a 4 out of 4 stars. The audio version is professionally narrated and I heard no grammatical errors or offensive language. The book follows a fictional, technological aspect of fighting terrorism. While considered a technological novel, the author also touches on romance, pregnancy, contraceptives, religion, and politics. The author does a good job discussing the ins and outs of a cyber war and the technology involved. Although fictional, the author instills a real fear in the reader and a willingness to get involved.

The aspect I like most about the story was the detailing of the cyber war. Details of how the terrorist infiltrate our everyday life were both exciting and scary. Dorothy May Mercer makes you want to get involved and be more observant of your surroundings. Cynthia’s inability to see her own flaws was what I dislike most about the book. Cynthia is a strong, tough female at the beginning of the book. As the story develops, Cynthia seems very needy and naive. She is tough-as-nails in her professional life but not so much in her personal one. She is relatable with her flaws but at times unbelievable in her thinking.

Cynthia and Dan: Cyber War will appeal to anyone who loves reading about technology, politics, and terrorism. The romance narrative might appeal to some but not serious romance readers. The book touches on several controversial issues such as pregnancy, abortion, and religion. I would not recommend this book to a younger audience as it goes into detail on pregnancy and abortion. My recommendation would be for young adults and up who like technology and political intrigue. A quick and interesting read for anyone who loves the technology genre.
