If you're looking for an adventure that will capture your mind and heart, look no further than Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon. If you seek a journey that will both keep you entertained and craving what comes next, this is the adventure for you. Step into the mind of an adolescent who has seen hard times but comes out richer and full of safety and family in the end. As adults, we often think that we know what's best. Sometimes, however, we are wise to stop and listen to what the younger generation is telling us. Occasionally, we may learn that what is being said, is exactly what we've been trying to teach.
What I liked most about this book was the excitement of the adventure. This book is not for the weak minded. There are many characters to keep up with simultaneously but this is not to say that it's confusing. On the contrary, it is enlightening and intriguing. It captures you and doesn't let you go until you have experienced the adventure all the way to the end. I really like that there is nothing gory in the book, yet the author easily puts you in the tense situations that could potentially call for explicit content. The author was able to put me directly into the story. I could relate to each character as if I was living the experience myself. Typically, I am able to relate to one or maybe two characters in a book, however, the author was able to draw me into each and every character that he wrote. I truly enjoyed going on this adventure.
What I disliked most about this book was the small errors within the character situations as well as the over usage of punctuation. In a couple of situations I found myself going back and forth to previous pages or chapters to be sure that I understood the situation. Page 222, “It will be the word of Fat Hair and Pretty Face against Thin Hair’s son, you, and me, a young stranger, who some say is a bad spirit.” In this situation, two characters are speaking to each other. The wording can indicate that there could be three, maybe even four people in the situation, when they were only talking about each other. Any confusion could have been thwarted had the sentence read, “It will be the word of Fat Hair and Pretty Face against you, who is Thin Hair’s own son and me, a young stranger who some say is a bad spirit.”
Profanity in this book is minimal. On page 3 and a couple of other times, the author used the word “Dammit”. I’m a firm believer that profanity isn’t necessary, but it works with the characters that the author created.
I would recommend this book for preteens through adults. I would also give it a 4 out of 4 stars. The writer, as well as the editor, did a great job with pulling you into the story as well as not distracting you with misspelled words and grammatical errors. Over use of punctuation was probably the only negative.
